  1. they weigh in at a little over a pound
  2. the average hedgehog has about 5,000 – 7,000 quills
  3. there are two large muscles on either side of a hedghog’s back that raise the quills
  4. they’re omnivores
  5. baby hedgehogs are called hoglets
  6. there are fourteen different species of hedgehogs
  7. while their backs are covered with quills, their face, legs, tail, and belly are covered with fur
  8. at birth, their quills are soft, but they harden several hours later
  9. they “anoint” themselves by depositing frothy saliva between their quills, something they do in response to pungent smells
  10. they are nocturnal
  11. they have an excellent sense of smell as well as hearing
  12. they protect themselves by curling into a ball
  13. they make a purring sound

I don’t remember where I was, but I’ve met a hedgehog face-to-face. It was very cute, and its spines were really neat.

Oh, I love hedgehogs! We have a couple living behind our garden shed. They’re pretty shy, but you can see them every once in a while.
