Interview with Zach Scheerer, Cover Model from WOLF HUNT! – Paige Tyler – New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

Interview with Zach Scheerer, Cover Model from WOLF HUNT!

I’m so excited to have you on my blog today! When my editor sent me the cover for WOLF HUNT, the newest book in my Special Wolf Alpha Team (SWAT) Series, I was absolutely thrilled. I couldn’t have asked them to pick a better model for the hero. You’re perfect for SWAT cop/werewolf hero Remy Boudreaux! The cover is absolutely gorgeous! ☺

Z) Thank you so much! I am really excited and feel blessed and honored to have breached one of your covers. Ever since I saw my buddy Greg on one of your covers I have envisioned me doing the same. So, I put that out into the universe and I am glad that our creative energies were brought together.

What types of things do the photographer (David Wagner) or publisher (Sourcebooks) tell you about the book? Do they give you a synopsis of the story or talk about your character’s “motivation?”

Z) Absolutely! David is an awesome guy. At the beginning of every cover we shoot, he always gives me a little back story as well as attributes to my character so I can hone in on my inner actor and project them into frame for the perfect shot to bring the cover to life.

Very cool! How many photos does the photographer take?  How long does the shoot take? Inquiring minds want to know!
Z) The shoots normally take about an hour or so. And I’d say anywhere from 150-500 photos. But it truly depends on the book and what they are looking for. Some know exactly what they want and others kind of give us free game to play around and really get creative. But once you put David, Craig, and I into a room together we tend to take a little longer because we have so much fun with it. These guys are professionals at what they do, but at the end of the day, if you’re not having fun and are so passionate about what you do to the point that time flies, then you need to rethink your career choice. I think life is about doing what you love and what you’re passionate about, and if you combine passion and drive and make it a career choice, then you truly never work a day in your life.
I completely agree with that! Did you see the completed cover before I showed it to you? What did you think of the finished version?
Z) I had not yet seen the cover until you shared it with me. They are very good at waiting and not releasing it too soon until everything is locked down and approved. When I saw that cover I was absolutely blown away! It was then, and still is one of my absolute favorites, if not MY FAVORITE of all time.
Mine, too! How did you get into modeling?
Z) Random story actually. After receiving my Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University, I started working with a company called DFM (Dynamic Fitness Management). I became a director of training and oversaw all the personal trainers’ businesses and their clients as well as developing them on how to better build and maintain a business. One day, I was working out and one of the clients of one of my PT employees approached me and said, “Hey, I work for Rawlings Sports Gear. Would you be interested in auditioning for a commercial?” I said yes, got the gig and that’s where it began. From there I did a few smaller things and then decided to pursue my true passion which was acting. After meeting Greg Plitt a few years prior and keeping in talks with him, he eventually inspired me to take a leap of faith, quit my great paying job in Illinois and move out to Los Angeles, California and pursue my giant dreams. Three years later, here I am. 🙂
That’s an awesome story! I’m certainly glad you did! If my SWAT Series gets optioned into a movie or TV show, are you available to play Officer Remy Boudreaux?
Z) ABSOLUTELY!! Without a doubt I would love to play this character in a movie or show and I feel I would represent him perfectly.
Speaking of acting, you’ve been in several commercials, as well as TV shows, and are currently filming a movie. First, congratulations! Next, what can you tell us about it? Give us the scoop!
Z) Thanks so much. I am really excited about this one. It’s an amazing script and I have had a blast diving into the character. Unfortunately, I am unable to disclose the goods as far as information goes at this time, but I assure you that you will not want to miss out on this film. I can tell you this; I am the lead character, and it’s action packed with martial arts, suspense, and supernatural elements. We’re still right in the middle of filming the production, but it should be out mid to late 2018 or possibly even earlier. I’ll definitely keep you all posted. And you can follow for recent updates on my facebook, insta (@zscheerer) or at 😉
You had me at “paranormal elements!” I’m so there. Are you a dog person or a cat person? Keep in mind that your character in the Dallas SWAT (Special Wolf Alpha Team) is a werewolf.
Z) I am a huge animal person in general. But I love both cats and dogs and I would have a hard time choosing one or the other. I have owned many cats and many dogs within my life.
On your website, you mention meeting the late Greg Plitt (the model on the cover of HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF, the first book in my Special Wolf Alpha Team Series several years ago), saying he inspired you.
Z) Oh man, Greg was a great friend and humongous inspiration for me in life. Talk about a down to earth, humble, and caring individual. He was that to a T. I met Greg in 2012 at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. We instantly became friends, and even though he lived on the other side of the country, we always kept in touch. It’s Greg that persuaded me to take the leap of faith, move to CA and chase after my goals. Once I moved here I got to spend a little time with him, working out, eating quesadillas (one of his faves) lol, he helped and mentored me every step of the way, and was always someone I could rely on for the truth in trying to break into this business. We had made a plan to go skydiving at some point in celebration of me moving out here but unfortunately he passed away before we could do so. I was devastated. In all honesty, I was scared to go, and kept putting it off. But a few weeks prior to his death I sent him a text and said, “I’m ready.” We planned to go soon, but it was too late. He passed before we ever had the chance.  Just a quick reminder, Life is too short. And it’s not the things you do that you regret right before you take your last breath, it’s the things you didn’t do, the potential you knew you had but never went after. A great life, is one that was lived without regret, one that was lived striving after your passions, in pursuit of your ambitions, life goals and dreams, and was met humbly with action. One that was lived to create as many moments into a memory as possible. A life creating footprints of inspiration for others to follow to attack in achieve in their own journey. That was GREG to a T. RIP brother. #Be Remebered #LegendsNeverDie
It was so sad about Greg. I see you also make fitness videos. What types of workouts are they?
Z) When it comes to fitness I believe there are 4 legs to the table of success. And a table will not be sturdy without all 4 legs. Those 4 legs are anaerobic training (weights), aerobic conditioning (cardio), nutrition, and rest. They all carry equal weight in the echelon of success. All my videos touch upon this type of mentality. And it’s not just about the body, it’s about the mind and the character that you begin to create while creating that body. The character building blocks of success in the gym are the same with any endeavor of life; sacrifice, dedication, perseverance, ambition, goal setting, etc. That’s what I’m about.
The werewolves in my SWAT Series aren’t turned from getting bitten. Instead, they have a gene that “switches on” and turns them into werewolves when they in through a life-and-death situation. Would you like to be a wolf shifter, or another kind of shifter, and why?
Z) I really thought about this question and I am going to get a little philosophical here so bear with me. LOL Honestly, we are all shifters in life. We all have been born with a fight or flight response system geared for life and death situations. But, that also can be seen as subjective. In life, it’s important to be able to find that inner spirit and unleash it when need be. Whether that be during training for a sport, studying for a test, going after a promotion, whatever it is, you have to be able to hone in on your highest energy within and release the best of yourself into the world. Find that inner self today, believe in it, and fight for what you want in life, since it’s the only one you have. Make that shift during the hard times and life, the adversity of life, and don’t give in or give up, instead “switch on” and attack life with the belief in your inner self that you can do anything you put your mind and energy to.
As I mentioned, the hero of WOLF HUNT is a SWAT cop. Was police officer ever something you wanted to be when you were a kid? If not, what did you want to be?
Z) Not really, at one time in life I actually thought about being a cop before I went to college, but that was short lived. lol
What’s your typical workout routine like?
Z) Right now while training for this movie I do;
Strength Training 3-4x per week , Cardio 2x per week and martial arts/MMA training 3x per week. I rest at least 2 days a week.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Z) During my free time I love to be with my girlfriend Sarah, her family (especially her nieces Ary and Hannah), as well as my family as much as I can get back to Illinois. These people are my rock in life. So I want to create as many memories with them as I can.
Also, I love to read. I am a huge self-help reader. I also enjoy psychology books since my major was sport and exercise psychology. Some of my favorite books are Unleash The Giant Within By Tony Robbins; Cultivating an Unshakable Character By Jim Rohn, and I am currently reading Outliers: Story of Success by Malcom Gladwell. I also like to listen to Allan Watts, and Les Brown.

Z) Well I am a huge movie buff so I have more than one. LOL Here are my top 10. Even though I could go on for days…lol
Enter The Dragon
Stand By Me
The Goonies
The Crow
Over the Top
Rocky 1-7

Z) Oh man, I’m excited right now!! I am working on a movie that I wish I could tell you more about. But it’s an action packed supernatural suspense that i will 100% tell you all more about soon!!
